Neverwas - DVD Review

The cinematography was spectacular, very rich golden colors. I believe it was filmed in British Columbia.
This is a story about a man, Zach Riley, who’s haunted by the past of growing up with a mentally ill parent.
As an adult he becomes a therapist. Searching for answers he goes to work at the mental hospital,
Millwood, where his father was once a patient. Gabriel, a patient in Millwood, is the one that leads Zack in
his journey of forgiveness, understanding, and peace.
This is not a fast paced movie, but it’s moving. Brittney Murphy is just as fabulous as she always is. Aaron
Eckhart is great. He portrays a tender man troubled by unresolved issues.
Sane or not so sane, we all struggle with issues of our past. The underlying theme I took from this movie is
how we all search for our place in life. We all need roots to remain grounded. What happens when the
place we are rooted isn’t a stable and supportive environment? Unfortunately that is the case more than
not. Many of us spend time searching for answers to close the loop and tidy things up in our brain. Hurt
manifests itself in many ways. For some it’s anger. For others it’s guilt. For some it manifests itself in
illness. When did it become so hard to be honest? Why is it so hard for us as humans to reach out and
touch someone when we are thinking kind thoughts of them? When did we decide that showing
appreciation, gratitude, love, and kindness is unnecessary or just not worth the few seconds it takes to
express it?
Sadly, I know someone who’s in their sixties who’s still so lost. It’s really sad to think that this person has
walked through sixty-four years of life with blinders on, just reacting to the things around her, never taking
charge or ownership, always being the victim, and never truly loving. See, she can’t love anyone when she’
s never learned to love herself. It’s so sad that it makes my heart weep. But, it’s her choice. She has to own
her life. No one can do that for her.
Now is what matters.
